Two things I keep seeing side by side. Amazon is helping pay for small nuclear reactors in Richland. Energy Northwest and X-energy plan up to 12 eventually, and the first phase is four reactors (320 MW), with the first one targeted for 2030. Amazon says it's part of 5+ gigawatts of new nuclear by 2039, to power its AI data centers. Meanwhile PSE wants electric rates up 15.15% in 2027, 3.74% in 2028, and 8.7% in 2029. PSE says its demand growth is mostly EVs and electrification, not data centers, though the regional power council lists data centers as a major driver of future grid needs. Washington tried to make data centers cover their own grid costs this year (HB 2515), and it passed the House 51-41 and died in the Senate. Public hearing on the rate request is October 7 (virtual), and written comments are open under UE-260005 and UG-260006 at utc.wa.gov. Should big tech be expected to build its own power instead of leaning on the shared grid? Genuinely curious what people think. I wrote a longer piece on this, link in the first comment. Comment 1: Full write-up with sources, including the nuclear and data center sections (I wrote it): https://ewyattmendel.substack.com/p/your-pse-bill-will-keep-rising-a I've got more coming on utilities and energy policy. I am applying for Canadian citizenship, and the Canadian government has specific specifications for photos which most U.S. passport photos do not meet. Can anyone recommend a local place Canadian citizenship photos? Thank you!
Hi everyone, I am waiting to clarify with the Tenants Union once their hotline is open but would appreciate some guidance from you all if anyone has experiences like this. I am trying to break my lease - the landlord is saying I owe 2months rent as an early termination fee AND "Tenant(s) in/are s ll responsible for all obligations under the Lease, including paying for all rent due, damages, u li es and other charges." So he's essentially saying the 2m fee is mandatory in ending the lease, however, I would still be financially liable for ongoing rent. To me, this is a win-win situation for him. I did sign an early termination addendum agreeing to this multifaceted fee structure since I didn't know better at the time. However, upon my research, I am finding out that through the Residential Landlord-Tenant Act, this addendum would be me waiving my rights and is unenforceable. I want to propose to my landlord it's either the 2months fee OR financial liability until a new tenant is found. Posting this for someone who's been through something like this or understands tenant/landlord laws better than I do. Appreciate your time! Thank you.
Hello everyone! I’m graduating in April with a Ph.D. in urban planning. I study maritime geography and have GIS skills and experience researching ports as part of my dissertation. If you know of any jobs at the Port of Seattle or Tacoma that need an urban port planner with waterfront planning, mapping, efficient transportation, and sustainable land-use expertise, please reach out. Thanks!
lol. Seems like a waste of time when the bad thing has not actually happened and there is no reason to think it will happen. Imagine the good they could have done dedicating that time to a different issue.
Community Transit is celebrating their 50th anniversary this week (technically yesterday on Oct 4)! There's going to be a pop up event at the ride store at the Lynnwood transit center this Wednesday, Oct 7 from 9a-5p where you can snag one, although if you go earlier and ask nicely they may just hand it out (I got mine there yesterday). Lynnwood TC is a easy trip away on the 1 or 2 line light rail. In celebration of the anniversary, buses are also free in their service area (Snohomish County) from October 1-8!
Recently moved to Puyallup and haven’t had much luck finding a job yet. Still got things to pay for. Willing to do whatever!
Dense foggy morning. Visibility is low. Bel-Red road down to Marymoor where months of roadwork & copious amount of $$$$s have been invested to make bikers safe from vehicles. Its a segregated bike lane for each direction with pedestrians now solely having the sidewalks. Biker in the roadway as if they're a motorized vehicle. Not the first time either during the past two months. Why is the very nice & empty bike lane not good enough to ride in? What makes it less desirable than the now narrow vehicle lane?
Imagine being a bureaucrat working for the City and this is what you’re focusing your time and energy on. I asked the staff at the Café and they told me the city didn’t give them a reason for requesting the closure, just a notice. If you ever hang out at VPC, email the City to let them know how much the community loves their garden and to let them open it back up!
It’ll be my first Thanksgiving in town and I want to run the turkey trot. Ofc it’ll be fun without one too but does anyone know if any races (5ks preferably) that hand out medals to their participants?
