I really wanna go rollerskating under a visually humid swamp of Christmas lights and disco balls. Ya know. Even those glitter streamers. The rinks near me are lacking and ugly. Im gonna drive a thousand miles if I have to. Hopefully I don't though.

I live in Capitol Hill. I frequent 15th Ave, and the past year has been business closure D-Day up here. Just in the past year, Ada's closed, Haunted Burrow, Rubinstein bagels (even though they sucked), and the Coastal Kitchen building has been vacant for well over a year. Whenever I reach out to these businesses about why they closed, it's radio silence. I can't even see if the spaces are up for lease on sites like LoopNet, so what on earth is going on?

Bhat's maps showed areas in the South End where lead contamination in community garden soils was elevated: the Central District, Mount Baker, Burien, South Park, and Des Moines. Some of the city's neighborhoods have lead levels that should require cleanup according to the Department of Ecology (Madison Park and Montlake and the Fremont/Phinney Ridge/Greenwood area), but there is no agency that mandates who should clean a specific area. "The difficulty is when our soil is contaminated at cleanup levels, our government supports to resolve this are lacking," said Bhat. "This is where more conversation and push are needed. The solution for gardens is generally raised beds and that takes resources." ~ The tests are free and the maps exist. The finding is that nobody is required to do anything with them, so the fix falls to volunteers with raised beds and sunflowers.

https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/movies/seattles-grand-illusion-cinema-to-take-over-varsity-theatre/?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio This is huge news for the film community in this city! If you're not familiar, the theatre is entirely volunteer run and recently lost it's longtime home on 50th and University. They do fantastic curation, tickets and popcorn are quite affordable, they serve Cheerwine, and the volunteer body is phenomenal. Please consider going or donating once they're up and running!

I'm exploring how people in Seattle spend their time outside of home and work as in where we gather, unwind, meet people, listen to music, work on things, and generally exist around other humans. Seattle Third Place & Wellness Community Survey Would love to get the Seattle communities' take on third places in the city! Take this 5 minute survey to contribute your perspective on how this looks and how it could improve. There are no right answers here. I'm much more interested in what you actually do than what sounds nice in theory :)

Seattle might be my favorite city for this series so far just because of what the geography does to the map. Back in February, $20 of gas worked out to about 91 miles of driving range from Seattle. At today's price, you're down to about 70 miles. Same twenty bucks, about 21 fewer miles. And unlike some of the other cities I've done, Seattle really shows why I calculate these using the road network instead of drawing a circle. Puget Sound and the limited ways around it make for a pretty wild shape. I'll throw the nerdier methodology stuff in a comment. Edit to add sorry about Anchorage in the bottom right, forgot to change it over from the last map.
