Article from the Oregonian and Hood River. But I assume the same thing is happening in White Salmon, Yakima, Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Methow, and Okanogan. TLDR. Wealthy people are buying up orchards because they are pretty and like the rural agricultural landscape. But they then don't manage their orchards to commercial standards, which provides a breeding ground for pests to thrive. Then those pests move into the adjacent commercial orchard that is still trying to make a profit (and not a hobby farm). The article says the pear industry around Hood River is on the brink of collapse and I assume a similar phenomenon is happening in WA. https://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/2026/09/as-neglected-orchards-spread-oregons-pear-industry-nears-a-breaking-point.html https://www.seattletimes.com/business/agriculture/oregons-pear-industry-nears-breaking-point-as-abandoned-orchards-pile-up/

I live near the Lakewood Barber on Warren and Madison and saw the barber walking down the street wearing a “Rhodesia” t shirt. I knew the guy was MAGA, but don’t care about that. Wearing a Rhodesia t shirt is basically equivalent of wearing a sign that says “I am a white supremacist” - was shocked to see this in my neighborhood. Anyways, figured I would share this in case anyone goes there.

I am visiting Seattle for the first time for a concert, and I wanted to explore the city for a few days. Have everyone been to the All In! Pan Party thrown by the Center for Sex Positive Culture? I don’t see too many posts about it, but I definitely want to check it out if the vibes are fun.

Hey reddit, I just needed to vent a little bit. I was raised in Seattle and joined the airforce and obtained my avionics technician certificate for the c17 hoping it would help me land a job at Boeing. After that, I went and got my degree in mechanical engineering and graduated with good grades. I got a job at a very nice tech company in Germany and thats when things began to unravel. I met a man there and fell disgustingly in love. He was waiting on his residency permit and we couldn't bare to be apart so I took up teaching english to stay in Germany. I couldn't find a job in engineering there as i didn't speak german well enough. Tbh, I didnt try very hard to get a job as that relationship took all of my energy. A LOT happened that left me bedridden for a year. Stuff I dont want to get into. After 3 years, we separated and I moved back to Seattle. I sent an obscene amount of tailored applications to engineering firms but only got one interview which didnt pan out. I was working as a bartender for two years at this point and finally gave up and moved back abroad, this time to an international school to teach STEM to kids. It paid well but I find myself still struggling a lot from the trauma I experienced a few years ago and i really just want to come home to Seattle and get into therapy. I have a modest savings account and a car. Im going to substitute teach as my friend told me it keeps her afloat. I plan to rent a room with roommates to keep costs low and to keep my savings untouched. Honestly, after all the applications I sent after my first attempt to move back to Seattle, I am not even sure if I want to even try and get a 'real job'. It would be one thing if I had an interview here and there. But the effort I put into applying without a single job offer made me think that no one is even looking at my resume or application. I have also applied to about 15 private schools without a response. I have paid someone to go over my resumes (i have two, one for teaching and one for engineering). I hate the thought of all my hard work for my bachelor's going to waste. At this point, id really prefer to just send all my documents to staffing agencies and take any position they offer to get my foot in the door. I would like to get my teaching license but it'll wipe out my savings and im so scared of being financially insecure again. This has been an ongoing debate in my head for two straight years. Going back for my masters holds the same risk. I do have family and friends in the area but after my messy separation I feel like i really burned them out with how bad things got and for the past 5 years my goal is to be as independent and burdenless. I did contact the V.A about help finding a job but I havent heard back. I dont have a lot of people to talk to about this because most people dont understand why I would leave a nice job abroad but tbh I have been painfully homesick for 2 years and haven't built the best community in this country and its never been a place id want to put down roots. I just wanted to ask. Does anyone have words of advice for me?

Hello! My family is flying into Seattle and unfortunately only have one full day to explore the city before we drive down the Oregon coast. We have an Airbnb in North Queen Anne and access to a rental car. We also have two toddlers aged 3 and 18 months. We’ll likely want to do Pike Place Market because we are tourists after all but if you had only one day to explore the city and pack in as much as possible with two toddlers, what would your perfect day look like?? Thanks so much in advance. We’re so excited for the trip and the cooler temps!!!

need to vent a little, been staring at this number for two days now. reassessment came in and it's a genuinely significant jump from last year, nothing changed about the house itself, no work done, nothing renovated, not even new appliances. talked to a couple neighbors over the weekend and it sounds like the whole area got hit similarly this cycle, which is somehow both reassuring (not just me) and not reassuring at all (so this might just be how it is now). trying to figure out if this is the new normal here or if there's actually something worth doing about it before i just accept a much bigger bill next year without looking into it at all. also mildly annoyed that the reassessment letter itself gives zero context for why the jump happened, just the new number and a deadline

Hello! My daughter is moving to the Tacoma area in a couple of weeks for work. She is early 20's and single and would prefer to live in an area with good walkability to shops/restaurants/bars and safe areas to go for a run. She would also like to be in an area where she could meet other young professionals. We thought the Stadium District sounded like a good choice. Second choice looks like University Place where she will probably get more space but less walkability. I've spent hours on the national real estate sites but I get the sense from reading Reddit posts that what you see on those sites is not what you get and many of the management companies can be a nightmare. Does anyone have specific apartments in either area that they are happy with? Open to buildings as well as houses that have been divided into apartments. Any other areas in Tacoma that we should consider? Targa and Greystar seem to be big management companies but are they to be avoided? Any good management companies or individuals that you recommend? She's basically looking for a 1B/B 500 sq ft (or larger) with total cost rent/utilities/parking under $2000. Secure entry, off street or garage parking and easy access to freeways for a commute would be great. Also, this is just for my curiosity, I love the older brick buildings but I notice in the photos that many do not have any kind of vent/hood above the stove in the kitchen? Is this not a code requirement in Tacoma or WA?
