Today I awoke around 5a to the sound of a trash can being pulled quickly down the street. Unsure why or where it was coming from - I took a look outside to see an unhoused person on a bicycle without any lights pulling behind them a trash can (pretty quickly) because a person in a VW was following chase. Honestly, it was pretty exciting to witness - and the bicycling trash can thief didn’t make it far before having to give up. So nice work VW driver. But it made me wonder - what is this city going to do about all the morning rats. 🪤

TLDR: Anyone know anything about the beehived bartender at the Rendezvous back in its dive heyday? I lived in Seattle from 1995 to 2004. We used to go to the Rendezvous on 2nd in Belltown when it was a serious dive bar, before the ~2000 reopening as a venue. One afternoon, either before or after a film at the Cinerama (I want to say it was Kubrick's 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm, but that's pure guess), a couple friends and I had some drinks at the bar and chatted with the bartender. She was an older white woman with a true beehive hairdo, and if memory serves she was a staple of the place (Memory may not serve as the drinks were bonkers strong. IYKYK). She told us that she used to be married to a jazz musician in LA and that the touring jazz players would hang out at their house, get high, and jam. I feel like she mentioned Monk and Chet Baker by name maybe. She said she still had reel-to-reel tapes of those jams, although she was clear that the musicians were often strung out. Does anyone remember her or also hear this story? I remain curious all these years later if this was true and who the husband might've been. I have no reason to believe it was bullshit, but she was a bartended at one of the diciest bars in downtown so all bets are off. Fun side note: That same afternoon one of the old drunks sitting a table near the bar decided he wanted to kill us and she had to 86 him. That might've been what started the conversation with her.

Hi everyone! Looking for recommendations for hands-on STEM classes, workshops, or local centers for a child turning 7.We want to avoid general robotics/Lego programming and instead focus on: Tinkering & physical engineering: Building, tactile invention, and understanding how hardware works. Questions: Are there specific local academies, maker spaces, or enrichment programs that offer dedicated electricity/electronics modules tailored for early elementary kids (ages 6–8)? TIA

I wanted to recommend a local home builder I know personally — GGR Contracting here in Seattle. They do custom homes and full remodels and have such an eye for design and detail. What I really like is how they manage the whole process — from working with architects and permits to construction — so homeowners don’t get stuck juggling multiple contractors. The results are modern, high-quality and thoughtfully built. If anyone’s planning to remodel or build a home around Seattle or the Eastside, definitely take a look at their portfolio: ggrcontracting.com . It’s a small, local business run by people who genuinely care about their work — I’ve seen their projects firsthand, and they do beautiful craftsmanship.

Lime already leaves scooters on sidewalks, clutters public spaces, and expects Seattle residents to live with the consequences of its business model. Now they’ve reduced an incentive for riders to wear helmets, too. Let’s look at the math: a $1 discount is meaningful and predictable. A 10% discount on a short ride might amount to pocket change. Why would anyone consider this an improvement when the whole point is to encourage safer behavior? Head injuries aren't trivial. They can mean permanent disability, lost income, and lifelong consequences for riders and their families. A helmet won't prevent every injury, but encouraging people to wear one is common sense. We shouldn't be moving backward on basic safety incentives. And this is bigger than a few cents. Lime profits from using Seattle's public spaces, while residents deal with improperly parked scooters and the consequences of irresponsible riding. The least we should expect is a meaningful commitment to safety, not a weaker incentive that makes helmet use less rewarding. Seattle riders: complain to Lime, contact the city, and ask why this change is acceptable. If enough customers and residents speak up, we can demand that Lime restore the $1 helmet discount. Public space isn't Lime's private playground, and rider safety shouldn't be an afterthought. Who else wants this discount brought back? Here's your opportunity! https://help.li.me/hc/en-us/requests/new

I am curious about the idea of leaving WA state if I were making enough money to get the extra 9.9% income Tax. Obviously that would make me over a million dollars a year if Initiative 645 remains. The part that I don’t understand is how easy it would be to just leave WA state at that income level. I am in my fifties and we have been through at least 7 career relocations involving moving from state to state within America. It was rather easy each time and not expensive. I have already heard the argument that people don’t leave a high-tax state for a lower-tax state. Except it didn’t make sense if you could keep more of your income why not just move to your lake property? These high-income people can make a call to their CPA and have everything addressed in a few months. Please let me know your thoughts.

Looking for advice/help - this kitty I found is so loving and sweet and I want to try and make sure I can bring him somewhere safe. Barnyard (the cat’s name) is microchipped, and the shelter was able to contact his registered owner, but we haven’t received a response from him and haven’t been able to find him on any social media. The shelter also informed us that he’s classified as a “barn cat” and recommended letting him go so he can find his way home. I’ve attached their email. I’m struggling with this recommendation because Barnyard is extremely affectionate, actively seeks human contact, and acts very frightened outside (repeated persistent meowing, trying to be picked up, waiting at doors). He’s been hiding in the bushes in front of our complex on and off for the past 24 hrs — I’ve brought him inside and have him closed off in my bathroom to keep him separate from my cat. We’re also in a densely populated part of Seattle, not a rural area. I’m hoping someone familiar with working-cat programs or microchip registrations can help me understand whether this classification necessarily reflects his current living situation, and what the safest next step would be. Thank you!
