The picket comes six months into contract negotiations that the union says are currently stalled over wages and AI use. While the company has agreed to prohibit the use of AI to interview people or write articles, it has declined to extend protections to other newsroom roles, such as photojournalists, copy editors and social media producers, according to the union. "Management has admitted at the bargaining table that it could use AI to replace jobs," journalist Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks said in a speech. The Seattle Times Co. and Newsday sued Microsoft and OpenAI on Sept. 4, alleging the companies used their journalism to train AI models without permission. ~ In court the paper argues its journalism is too valuable to feed to a machine. At the bargaining table it will put that in writing for reporters and stop before the photo desk. A public petition for a no-replacement pledge is at 1,600 signatures and the next session is Oct. 13.

Seattle, let's talk about this weekend. From 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5 , two major closures will be happening at the same time: I-5 EXPRESS LANES: CLOSED The I-5 express lanes will close for the entire weekend while crews continue drainage work underneath the Ship Canal Bridge as part of Revive I-5. The express lanes have been doing some heavy lifting this year, running northbound 24/7 while northbound I-5 remains reduced to two lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge. But for this work, we need the express lanes themselves. Closing them gives crews access to sections underneath the bridge that can't be reached from existing scaffolding. They'll connect drains installed during an earlier phase of the project to the bridge's permanent drainage system. Last time, we said we’d cross that bridge when we got there. Well, we’re here. This is the second and final planned weekend-long express lane closure for this year. EASTBOUND SR 520: I-5 TO MONTLAKE CLOSED At the exact same time, eastbound SR 520 will close between I-5 and Montlake Boulevard. The Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to EB SR 520 will remain open. Crews will use this closure to prepare sections of the existing bridge and what remains of the old off-ramp, which closed back in June, for removal. One important distinction: eastbound SR 520 is NOT closed across Lake Washington. If you're already in Montlake, the Montlake Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound SR 520 will remain open and you can still travel east across the lake. But if you're coming from I-5, you won't be able to hop onto eastbound SR 520. You'll need to take an alternate route. SO... WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE WEEKEND? With the I-5 express lanes unavailable and access to eastbound SR 520 from I-5 closed, expect longer and less predictable trips in and around Seattle. This weekend may require a little more planning than simply picking your usual alternate. Other routes will likely be busier as people find their way around the closures, so check your entire route before you leave rather than assuming your usual alternate will be the best alternate. Give yourself plenty of extra time, consider transit or other modes when they work for your trip and check real-time conditions before heading out. And if you're headed to Sea-Tac, give yourself even more breathing room. There are also southbound I-405 lane reductions in Tukwila from Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon that could affect airport trips. Some of this work is weather dependent and subject to change. Check back in the comments before the weekend. We’ll post an update there if anything changes.

Hello, not sure if I’ll have any luck but looking for information. A friend was hit yesterday just before 3:30pm on Seward Park Ave S. Attached estimated area. They are stable and out of surgery now, but received several broken bones and lacerations. Anyone in the area with doorbell cams or happen to see the driver?

Lost rescue pigeon Dodo — Sunset Hill/Ballard Our rescue pigeon Dodo was chased from our yard by a hawk around 4:30pm on 9/30. The hawk pursued him out of sight and we haven’t been able to find him. If anyone in or around Sunset Hill/Ballard has a pigeon land on your head (seriously), it’s likely Dodo. He’s extremely comfortable with people and has been hand-raised since he was about 2 weeks old. He looks like a fairly normal gray pigeon, but has a deformed left foot that’s most noticeable when he’s walking around. If you spot him, please message me with the location/photo if possible. We’re really hoping he managed to get away from the hawk and is hanging out somewhere nearby.

Hi all! I’m planning a move to Seattle from the South and Pioneer Square is at the top of my list, so I’d love some honest advice from people who live there or know the area well. I’m hoping to make the move around late October /November , and I’ll likely be earning around $125k. I’m looking at a budget of about $2200 a month for a studio/1BR/2BR with flexibility. I have a car, so parking is a big question for me. Is street parking realistic, or should I only look at buildings with dedicated spots, and what does that usually run? I’m also moving solo for now, but my teenagers will be in the coming along down the road, so I’m trying to think about long-term fit too. I’m looking for something walkable with good food and a real neighborhood feel, where I’d feel comfortable walking around at night. What’s daily life in Pioneer Square really like right now, the good and the bad? Are there buildings or landlords you’d recommend or steer clear of? And if you think another neighborhood like Capitol Hill, Georgetown, or Beacon Hill might be a better fit, I’m all ears. Anything you wish you’d known before moving would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much!
