As a board-certified family practice physician in Washington state who currently provides healthcare to many children, I’m compelled to help voters understand why I-638 on our November ballots poses a direct threat to the health and safety of school-age girls. I-638 is an initiative that would require all elementary, middle and high school girls to be medically sex certified just to play with their friends on an after-school team. There are only three ways to be in compliance as a physician with this initiative: conduct an intrusive examination of girls’ “reproductive organs,” or conduct costly genetic or hormone testing. Nowhere in this initiative does it say parents can use their child’s birth certificate to verify a girl’s sex. It’s important to note that this poorly written initiative exempts boys from this new requirement. Many parents will have to rely on a stranger to certify their daughter’s sex because more than 175,000 school-age girls in Washington do not have access to a regular doctor, according to the National Survey of Children’s Health. In addition, genetic and hormone testing may cost families hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket. Even for the families lucky enough to have medical insurance, these uncommon lab tests may not be reliably covered. Forced examinations of girl’s genitalia would discourage many girls from even trying to play school sports. Physical exams of girls’ reproductive organs may require pelvic exams, which are not only medically unnecessary for sports, they can emotionally and physically harm young girls. All parents of girls can understand how this could have a harmful impact on young girls and women. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says there is no medical reason for a pelvic exam for girls younger than 21 unless the patient has other health concerns. Beyond genital examinations before school age, most doctors only examine the genitalia of children if there are developmental problems or concerns for abuse. You may think girls already have their genitals looked at to play sports, but that’s just not true. Right now students remain fully clothed during Washington sports readiness exams, as supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine and American Academy of Family Physicians, but I-638 will change that for many girls. Although The American Academy of Family Physicians says sports physicals should take place “not in a group setting,” many families depend on free large group sports physicals where girls could face greater embarrassment and harm from invasive genital inspections. Physical activity is core to a healthy lifestyle, something I have spent my career promoting. By requiring girls to undergo invasive inspections before being allowed to play any sports, I-638 creates barriers for all girls to accessing the physical, social and emotional benefits of playing sports. That’s why I have joined many other family physicians, the WA State Nurses Association, Planned Parenthood, the League of Women Voters and many more community organizations in opposing I-638. The backers of this initiative claim to want to protect girls. But if you care about the health and futures of all girls in Washington, vote no on this poorly written and damaging initiative this November. Anyone have any suggestions on a nanny agency or other approach to finding a nanny in the Everett area? I am aware of Care.com, but was wondering if people had more local recommendations.

Lost a pebbled black leather purse on 8/22, left in Lime glider bike basket in Maple Leaf neighborhood (on NE 90th St). Been searching all Facebook Groups, Nextdoor, etc and I JUST on Sunday learned about FoundIt and saw that the next Lime rider DID find it and posted it on Founditapp.org!! But there is no way to reach out to the person, and the site says that if you see your lost item listed to submit a Lost Report and "they'll do the matching"...but so far crickets. I've submitted 3 Lost Reports, reached out directly to their support email multiple times, and nothing. Has anybody had any success getting their lost item back through that app??

Hi everyone! My previous post got very long winded, it is hard to continuously read the comments of sightings. I made this post to let everyone know that Corey was in fact the man found in Forest Park yesterday morning. It has been difficult and sudden and everything hurts. I’ve read all of the comments and messages and am very thankful for all of your support and engagement in the hopes of bringing him home. Corey was a great man. The love of my life, really. I hope that you hold your loved ones tightly, and let them know they matter. He mattered. He still matters. My coworker created a GoFundMe to help with all of the changes that’ll take place now. I don’t know if posting it here is allowed, but it is on Facebook & I can share it with whom ever may want to help. If not, I have a wonderful mental health organization that Corey and I spoke about over the years that I’ve also encouraged people to donate to
