Hi all, My mother has requested, for Christmas, a Salish styled cross, and I've looked around and realized cross imagery is not in the Salish tradition at all. But I had the idea of finding a Salish jewelry designer with beautiful pendants to wear with her cross. I don't want anything related to closed practices, I'm only looking for designers who create for non native people. If it matters my mother spent her first fifty years here, she respects and honors Salish culture completely, she has no interest in disrespecting Salish culture. So, what I'm asking is if there are any Salish artisans doing formline jewelry that isn't specifically religious. Spiritual is fine, lutherans are good with that as long as the artisan is good with that. I'd love to find a gold pendant I can stack with a simple cross for her. She is a deacon in her church in Sacramento and finds herself advising people to both follow the liturgy and spend time with nature so I don't think it's a contradiction, I just don't want to offend any members of the first nations. Thank you

I've worked with (very loosely) Friends of (Seattle) Street Ends: https://www.streetends.org/ I found out last year there are 142 Seattle street ends that are public property in Seattle, but about 2/3s are either not suitable for visit (full of invasive weeds) or are fully or partially encroached upon by neighbors. I took a picture of a few of them. Did you know that area under University Bridge, the beach is public? It sure looks like someone's private property, but no. By encroached, I mean either fully fenced off, used as parking or storage, or marked with intimidating signs saying "Security Cameras in Use" etc. I marked this as Community but in reality it is a political problem as the City of Seattle has sort of tried to shy away from tackling the issue. Dealing with dozens or more lawsuits to settle issues of encroachment would be pretty ugly. It's being dealt with incrementally, but it's not easy. Of course, formally opening up public land without consideration for issues of erosion or consideration of the neighbors leads to problems. Seattle Parks already have a squatting problem. People are sensitive about cars parking in front of their houses, etc. Anyway if you're interested in participating in protracted, ugly political, legal, and ecological battles it's an area to watch. And don't go on a crusade just yet.

I’m looking for a recommendation for the best nail salon that does acrylics (not gel X or other press ons). I have my engagement photoshoot coming up soon and I would like to get a really good set before I go. Quite a lot of places only seem to do press-ons now and I don’t love them for a few reasons. Please post your favorite salons for acrylics!

A portrait of Seattle men. Pale. Bearded. Bespectacled. Slightly chubby. Five men who appear to have emerged from the ecosystem stretching from Capitol Hill to Fremont. They have been spotted at queer bars, vegan restaurants, bookstores, record shops, art spaces, protests, and coffee shops where everyone looks like they have a podcast. One lives in Capitol Hill. One has strong opinions about Ballard. One has a favorite independent bookstore. One is explaining gender theory over coffee. One has somehow turned a conversation about brunch into a critique of capitalism. They gather in fursuits, oversized sweaters, thrifted clothes, and outfits that raise several interesting questions. Some are discussing gender. Some are discussing politics. One says he is a woman. One is dressed as an animal. And nobody seems particularly surprised by any of it. This is not a convention. This is just a Saturday in Seattle. 🦄🇵🇸🏳️‍⚧️💑

That’s 4 accidents that we have heard during the day since we’ve been here. The wrecks sound slow (if you can imagine): sound of metal on metal scraping along, crumpling slowly. S 21st is so steep with poor visibility of oncoming and cross traffic. (Nice east view, though). Any efforts in making this spot safer? I’m curious about the actual number of wrecks in a year.

Howdy gents! I’m visiting downtown Seattle for a conference, and wanted to ask for some suggestions on cool places to visit during my down time. I’m interested in queer spaces, queer history, weed stores, gaming, professional wrestling, nerd culture, and gay bars. (Real smutty places are fine suggestions! ;-) ) Also, what’s a cool spot to post up with my laptop in downtown Seattle to each brunch / lunch at? Maybe some place by the water? If I was to eat at one place that I will remember for years on end, what place would that be? Thanks y’all; looking forward to visiting your awesome city!
